POLYSACCHARIDE SUBSTANCE OF PHELLODENDRI BARK EXTRACT AND DRUG FOR SKIN OR HAIR CONTAINING SAID POLYSACCHARIDE SUBSTANCE BLENDED THEREIN

PURPOSE:To obtain a polysaccharide substance, capable of providing a solution, prepared by adding a small amount thereof to water and exhibiting viscosity of good smooth feeling and excellent in wettability (humectant action), by extracting a water- soluble extract and lipid components from Phellodendri bark and collecting the above- mentioned polysaccharide substance from the resultant residue. CONSTITUTION:Berberine or water-soluble extract containing the berberine or fat- soluble extract, such as linoleic acid phytosterol, is obtained from Phellodendri bark and the residue is dried. Purified water or an aqueous solution of sodium chloride is added and the resultant mixture is thoroughly stirred, mixed, then centrifuged or filtered to separate and collect an upper layer liquid. Methanol or ethanol in the same amount as that of the upper layer liquid is then added to afford a deposited polysaccharide substance having =200000 molecular weight which is an extract from the Phellodendri bark. The above-mentioned polysaccharide substance is used as a wetting agent in drugs for the skin and the hair, viscosity regulator or dispersion stabilizer and further for softening, thickening and stabilizing emulsions of frozen food, ice cream, etc.
