NEW MATERIAL:A magnetic material of an org. polymer having repeating units of the formula. USE:Poly(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenylacetylene) which generates spins of a high density in the org. conjugated system when it is oxidized and which is useful as a memory material. PREPARATION:beta-Chloro-3,5-di-tert-butylcinnamaldehyde obtd. by reacting 4- acetyl-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl acetate with the Bilsmeyer reagent is hydrolized to separate 4-acetoxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenylacetylene, which is then deacetylated to obtain 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenylacetylene. Then, this monomer is polymerized in a solvent, e.g., CCl4 in the presence of a polymn. catalyst consisting of a tungsten as the main component at 0-50 deg.C and the polymn. catalyst is decomposed by adding methanol, etc. The reaction mixture is dropped into a satd. hydrocarbon (e.g., hexane) to obtain poly(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4- hydroxyphenylacetylene) having repeating units of the formula.
