PURPOSE:To measure the photoelastic strain of an object having a rough surface, by a method wherein a film composed of an adhesive mixed with a metal having gloss is formed on the surface of the object having a rough surface hard to reflect light such as foamed plastic or wood and a film composed of a photoelastic material is formed to the surface of said film to irradiate these two layers with light. CONSTITUTION:When the photoelastic strain of an object 1 to be measured composed of foamed plastic is measured by a photoelastic strain measuring method, a film 2 composed of an adhesive mixed with a metal having gloss is formed on the surface of the object 1 to be measured in a predetermined thickness. Subsequently, a film 3 composed of a photoelastic material wherein a main agent (EPI coat), a curing agent (diethylenetriamine) and a softening agent (thiocol) are compounded in predetermined amounts is formed on the surface of the film 2 in a predetermined thickness. The object 1 to be measured having the films 2, 3 formed thereto is irradiated with light (a) from a light source 4 through a polarizing plate 5 and the reflected light a' from said object 1 is received by a camera 7 through a polarizing plate 6 to take an image. By this method, a sharp photoelastic pattern is obtained and analyzed to accurately measure the strain of the object 1 to be measured.
