PURPOSE: To reduce operational speed, pressure and temperature to harmless values as quickly as possible by releasing a by-pass valve to allow the air from a compressor to flow directly to a turbine in the event of operational disturbance. CONSTITUTION: In the event of operational disturbance, a compressor-turbine unit 34, 38, 48 is isolated from a bed vessel 12 by closing a cut-off valve 54 in a supply conduit 32 for propelling gas from the bed vessel 12 to the turbine 34 and a cut-off valve 58 in a conduit 50 from the compressor 48. A cut-off valve 64 in a by-pass conduit 62 between the turbine 34 and the compressor 48 is opened to allow the air from the compressor 48 to flow directly to the turbine 34. Furthermore, when combustion gas from the bed vessel 12 is dumped into atmosphere via a conduit 68, coolant is supplied into the combustion gas upstream of a blow-off valve 72. Thus, as speed, pressure and temperature are quickly reduced to harmless values, it is possible to protect the unit.
