PURPOSE:To obtain the titled sintered compact, useful in the field of tools, by forming a raw material powder consisting of ZrO2 and given amounts of Nd2O3 and Y2O3 as a stabilizer for the crystal structure, forming the raw material powder, sintering the resultant compact and subjecting the sintered compact to hot hydrostatic pressing treatment. CONSTITUTION:A raw material powder blend prepared by blending ZrO2 with 0.1-3.5mol.% Nd2O3 and 0.5-3.0mol.% Y2O2 as a stabilizer for the crystal structure is formed, sintered and then subjected to hot hydrostatic pressing treatment at 1,300-1,600 deg.C under =100kg/cm2 pressure to afford the aimed sintered compact having the crystal structure consisting essentially of tetragonal crystals or tetragonal and cubic crystals and =1mu average crystal grain diameter and =25% stress induced modification ratio.
