Plastic packing elements for a random arrangement inside biological trickling filters can have spherical contours with a circular base plate, an annular stiffener plate at tight angles to it, and circular parallel laminae. The base plate has a passage in the centre and the laminate are spaced at a distance of 1-10 mm from each other. In case of a hollow toroidal shape, alternate semicircular segments are cut out from the surfaces.
