The protein yeast recombinant gag precursor of greater than 95% purity or equally pure variant thereof. This protein is myristoylated and therefore different in at least one respect from E. coli-produced recombinant gag precursor. Recombinant gag precursor is alternatively expressed in a recombinant insect eypression system. The purified gag precursor is useful as a vaccine and in commercial assays of AIDS viral protease.
