An electric accumulator comprises (a) an anode compartment contg. a gp. Ia, IIa, IIb and/or IIIb metal anode (b) a cathode compartment contg. a cathode of conducting material capable of accepting electrons to form anions by cathodic redn. and a molten electrolyte capable of dissolving prods. generated during discharge, and (c) a fluid impervious wall of solid mineral electrolyte selectively allowing anode metal cation migration separating anode and cathode compartments. The accumulator also includes (d) a porous matrix adjacent the anode and (e) at least one salt of the anode metal allowing migration of the metal as a cation, maintained molten and permeating the porous matrix. The salt and matrix are interposed between anode and sepn. wall. The cell supplies high energy density and high power density, e.g. single cell has power density reaching 100 mV/cm2 (sepn. wall) at 1.6 V, open circuit voltage 2.85. This cell can accept 4Ah/cm2 at 0.5A/m2 (8hr) charge or 13.2Ah/cm2 at 0.066A/cm2 (200hr) charge. Operating temp. is pref. ambient up to 200 degrees C.
