ABSTRACTAn improved, energy efficient, hot rolling method fordirect production of cold formable dual-phase steel isprovided. The steel is heated to completely austenitize itand then continuously hot rolled and cooled down into theferrite-austenite two phase region to a temperature whichis just below the effective Ar3 temperature. The hotrolled steel is then rapidly quenched to provide an alloycontaining strong, tough lath martensite (fibers) in aductile soft ferrite matrix. The method is particularlyuseful for providing rods in which form the alloy iscapable of being drawn into high strength wire or the likein a cold drawing operation without any intermediateannealing or patenting, and has excellent strength,ductility and fatigue characteristics.
