-45-ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method of increasing the clearance of particlesfrom the blood stream of a vertebrate, which comprisesadministering to a vertebrate having a surplus ofparticles in the blood stream of the vertebrate anamount of a somatostatin analogue sufficient toincrease phagocytosis in the vertebrate is disclosedalong with a method treating vascular lesions ordeterioration of biological membranes comprising thestep of administering to a human or other mammalsuspected of having one or more vascular lesions or ofhaving deterioration of a biological membrane in theliver of said human or mammal an amount of asomatostatin analogue sufficient to reduce the numberor severity of said lesions or to prevent furtherdeterioration or reduce the extent of deterioration ofsaid membrane.
