PROPAGATION OF NETWORK QUERIES THROUGHSUPERIOR SUBORDINATE AND PEER-PEERDATA DISTRIBUTION RELATIONSHIPSA directory database system includes a network and aplurality of directory service units (DSU), each of theDSUs providing one or more directory service functionswithin the directory database. For propagation of anundirected user query relative to an object in the databasefrom a source DSU to one or more target DSUs, one ofwhich may contain information relative to the object, apropagation (P) table is provided in each of the DSUs,the P tables being a data structure capable of determiningwhich other DSUs to send the user query to.The source DSU examines its associated P table forthe directory type specified in the query to generate anidentification of one or more additional target ones ofthe DSUs to which the query should be directed. Afterpropagating a query from the source DSU to those additionalDSUs identified by the P table in the source DSU, thereis returned to the source DSU information responsive tothe user query from the one of the additional target DSUscontaining the information.
