The tree trunks (3) to be introduced into a processing machine (23) are fed through several sets (5-10) of centering cylinders (11) arranged sequentially and fed on their central plane. During this operation, the centering cylinders (11) arranged at the start and at the end of the tree trunk are brought into engaging contact with the latter (3). Downstream cutters (2) form guide surfaces (21) on the tree trunk (3), on which the trunk is immediately supported and guided by guide members (22).
