After machining and heat treatment, metal components are blasted with steel balls to improve their qualities. For improved quality control, test plates of different thicknesses and lengths are blasted, resulting in a curvature, and the depth of the curvature (f) is measured for each thickness (H) and length (l). A curve corresponding to the function fxH3 is plotted against the thickness. A straight line (1) sloping at an angle is obtained, starting from a distance (Ho) corresponding to the depth of impression, the angle of slope indicating the residual stress. ADVANTAGE - The surface treatment can be controlled within determined limits by using the residual stress.
