The intensity of an alternating electromagnetic field (12) emitted from a housing surface (10) via an electrode (11) can be modulated by a target body (20). The modulated field is picked up by one or more receiver electrodes (13) on the surface connected to an evaluation circuit. The transmitter and/or receiver electrodes are strips around the housing mounted on the surface so as to be electrically insulated. Alternatively, they may be rectangular strips insulated from each other and the surface with their longitudinal axes parallel to each other and to an axis of symmetry of the housing.
