For producing cutting materials based on tetragonal zirconium dioxide, a fine-crystalline, chemically homogeneous, stabilised tetragonal zirconium dioxide powder having a specific powder surface area of 3 to 50 m2/g is mixed in an aqueous or alcoholic medium with 0 to 50% by weight of tetragonal hafnium dioxide and 0 to 40% by weight, relative to the total of ZrO2 and HfO2, of Al2O3 powder or/and TiC powder, an organic stabiliser is added to the resulting powder suspension, and the slip thus produced is cast and dried with shaping and then densified to give a compact homogeneous article.
