To lay geotextiles for the slope and bottom protection of waterway linings, in which the geotextile sheet, in particular consisting of polyester fibres made up into woven fabrics or nonwovens, is drawn off from a roll and is placed on the bottom via at least one deflection roller and is then covered with rip-rap, a laying apparatus is proposed with which satisfactory run-off of the geotextile sheet is ensured and which in its use is intended to hinder the shipping on the waterway as little as possible. The laying apparatus (10) is designed as a floatable and submersible watercraft which, provided with at least one floodable tank (14.1; 14.2; 15), can be lowered onto the bottom (3) of the waterway to be protected, the top side of the watercraft (11) being provided with a receptacle for the geotextile roll (20), and the underside of the watercraft (11) having at least two skids (11.1) preferably extending over its entire length, and two projecting sounding rods (19) being provided, the connecting line of which runs parallel to the axis of the geotextile roll (20).
