A process for the preparation of polyarylene sulphides, preferably polyphenylene sulphide (PPS), having melt viscosities which can be adjusted in a defined manner from alkali metal sulphides and polyhaloaromatic compounds in a polar solvent in the presence of a ketone or pinacone. The resultant polyarylene sulphides having defined melt viscosities are distinguished by high melt stability and a low chlorine content. They cause little corrosion on the reaction vessels used for their preparation.
