The invention relates to a two-stroke internal combustion engine with divided cylinders fitted at the side of the working cylinder and serving for the delivery of fresh gas or for secondary expansion of the combustion gases, which cylinders have oscillating pistons, the axes of which run parallel to the crankshaft centre axis and about which the pistons are made to oscillate, driven by the crankshaft. The oscillating pistons have cylindrical enlargements which are supported in bores of cylinders cast together with the working cylinder. The divided cylinder running surfaces of the oscillating pistons, on the other hand, are arranged in a single or multipart housing enclosing the working cylinder or cylinders. This measure simplifies the two-stroke internal combustion engine of the type with divided cylinders arranged at the side of the working cylinders. This makes manufacturing easier. For example, the housing having the running surfaces for the oscillating pistons and simultaneously designed as crank case can be manufactured from die-cast lightweight alloy, in which the running surfaces for the oscillating pistons are produced at the same time in the casting process without finish machining.
