In a process for producing barium or strontium hexaferrite powder used in the production of permanent magnets, a mixture of raw materials containing solid iron oxide and barium or strontium carbonate is weighed on a balance, homogenized in a mixer after addition of water, and reacted by combustion in a continuous furnace to yield hexaferrite. Addition of a barium or strontium hydroxide solution, which replaces at least part of the carbonate, to the mixture of raw materials significantly improves the magnetic properties of the hexaferrite powder and reduces manufacturing costs of permanent-magnet powder.
