Telomers are prepared by reacting chlorotrifluoroethylene with 1,1-dibromo-1-chlorotrifluoroethane (CBr2 ClCF3) in the presence of a redox catalyst system comprising a reducible metal compounds selected from FeCl3, FeBr3, Fe2(SO4)3, CuBr2, CuCl2, TiCl4, VCl3 and NiCl2, and a reducing agent selected from Fe, Ni, Cu, Ti, V and benzoin or in the presence, as catalyst, of the afore-mentioned metal halides in their reduced form, the reaction being conducted in a common solvent for reactants and catalyst. The resulting telomers are useful for preparing non-flammable hydraulic fluids.
