The invention consists of an elastic belt which can be compressed, whose total length is greater than the circumference of a press roll of a press roll pair, as a replacement for a normal press roll cover in a paper machine. A belt of this type is carried by the press roll but runs independently of the latter and forms the necessary elastic medium in the press nip. The belt can have a smooth surface, a grooved surface or a surface provided with recesses or else can be perforated, according to the requirements for a specific application.
