An oxygen sensor is proposed comprising at least one oxygen pumping element (16) which has a solid-electrolyte plate (10) and two porous electrodes (12, 14), one of which in each case is disposed on the outer faces of the solid-electrolyte plate (10), a gas diffusion chamber (18) which covers one of the porous electrodes (12), and a gas diffusion passage which connects the gas diffusion chamber (18) and the environment of the oxygen sensor (1), the thickness of the oxygen sensor being between 0.7 and 1.2 mm and the width being between 2.8 and 4.0 mm. The limited size (compact size) results in enhanced resistance to repeated thermal shocks and in a shorter warm-up time which in turn results in higher accuracy and higher response sensitivity in measuring the oxygen content.
