Device for generating a swirl of variable intensity for an internal combustion engine, especially a diesel engine, of the type arranged in an intake manifold 8 of this engine, upstream and in proximity to the corresponding valve 7 for imparting a rotational movement to the combustion air about the axis of the corresponding cylinder. According to the invention, this device comprises a movable flap 12 capable of pivoting about an axis of articulation 14 connected to a control mechanism 16 and running across the intake manifold 8 from side to side, whilst closely following the surface of this manifold with its upper 20 and lower 22 contact surfaces.
