The invention relates to a device and a method improving the functioning of an internal combustion engine, this engine comprising an inlet valve, a throttle element causing a loss of charge on the inlet to at least one cylinder of the said engine. The device according to the invention is characterised in that it comprises an auxiliary pipe designed to connect, for at least a part of the admission phase of the said cylinder, on the one hand a gas source in which a pressure greater than that prevailing downstream of the said throttle prevails for at least a part of the operating range of the said engine, and on the other hand the combustion chamber of the said cylinder, a part of the said auxiliary pipe being arranged in the body of the said valve.
