The invention relates to the production of a joint in a concrete slab. The slab is poured and, immediately after pouring, the slab of fresh concrete is cut over a fraction of its thickness and the desired joint element is placed in the cut thus obtained. The invention also relates to a machine for producing the joint, this machine comprising a gantry crane 1 which can move in translation, a cutter 2 suspended from the gantry crane by means 3 enabling it to be moved vertically, this cutter having the shape of the joint lengthwise. The machine preferably also comprises a table 4 suspended from the gantry crane by means 5 enabling it to be moved vertically in order to apply it onto the slab, this table having a vertical slot L suitable for receiving the sliding cutter.
