The present invention relates to devices making it possible to analyse the surface condition of the ground, from a moving object moving relative to this ground. The detector according to the invention is essentially characterised in that it comprises a source 10 of a beam 11 of radiation of the electromagnetic type, means 12 for attaching the source to the moving object 3, so as to direct the beam to a point 13 on the surface 6, a receiver 14 for receiving a beam 18 of the same type, this receiver being capable of delivering 15 signals representative of the received beam, means 16 for attaching the receiver to the moving object, so as to direct its reception axis substantially on to the point on the surface, and being capable of picking up at least a part of the beam reflected from this point, and means 60 for processing the signals which can be emitted by the receiver.
