Overhead camshaft drive for transversely mounted engine

The motor vehicle has a transversely mounted engine which has one or more overhead camshafts (12) which are driven from the crankshaft (4) through an auxiliary shaft (8). The auxiliary shaft (8) is driven by a chain (6) from the crankshaft so that it runs at half the crankshaft speed. The auxiliary shaft (8) then drives the camshaft (12) through a toothed belt (10), a driving pulley (9), a driven pulley (11) and guide pulleys (13,14). The chain drive between crankshaft and auxiliary shaft is contained inside the crankcase.
