The method is applicable especially to video sculpture. By means of cameras 13a, 13b and of video recorders 14a, 14b a series of images are recorded of the three-dimensional surface illuminated by a plane beam of laser light generated by a laser 12. The method includes a phase of passing from the coordinates of the image points recorded by the vision system to the spatial coordinates employed by the module 17, a phase of reconstituting the points possibly badly recorded by the vision system, implemented by the module 16, and a phase of determining the axis of a tool 18 sculpting the three-dimensional image in a material such as wood or aluminium, the latter phase being implemented by the module 19.
