PURPOSE:To obtain an organic nonlinear optical material showing excellent nonlinear optical effects such as emission of a high level of secondary harmonic waves by using an optically active amine carboxylate salt obtained from a carboxylic acid bearing conjugated double bonds and a specific optically active amine. CONSTITUTION:The subject material is obtained by reaction of a carboxylic acid of formula I [n is O to 2: Ar is 6-14 C aromatic group; X, Y are ethers of R1-O-(R1 is 1-3C hydrocarbon, H), amino of formula II (R2, R3=R1), nitro of R4=R1)], for example, 3-(3,4 dimethoxyphenyl)-2-cyanopropane with at least one optically active amine selected from 2-amino-1-butanol and 2-amino-1-(p- nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanediol. The product is a solid with a crystalline structure having no center or reverse summetry with a large nonlinear sensitivity at the molecular level, and is used in the production of optical switches or memories.
