PURPOSE:To light a flash lamp at a high repeating cycle by repeating the cycle wherein the application of a voltage is stopped before glow discharge is transformed into arc discharge at a high repeating rate, and projecting light is shielded. CONSTITUTION:A cycle wherein a voltage is applied to a flash lamp 6, glow discharge is performed, and the application of the voltage is stopped before transition to arc discharge is repeated. As a driving power source 4 for highly repeating pulses which drives the flash lamp 6, a capacitance transition type power source using a thyratron 31 is employed. The highly repeating pulses having the width of 100-300nm are obtained. When input power is supplied within 1-mus time interval, the transition phenomenon from the glow discharge into the arc discharge is suppressed. Not only the discharge stays in the glow discharge state, but also there is no evaporation of electrode metal. Since the recovery of insulation between the electrodes is quick, the high repeating of 20kHz can be performed.
