PURPOSE:To obtain a metallized surface having moderate reactivity with ceramics and high and reliable strength by using Mn, W, Ti and/or Zr, Ag and Ni at specific ratios. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition for metallizing the surface of ceramics is a powdery mixture of a composition composed of 10.0-32.5wt.% of Mn, 45.0-67.5wt.% of W, =5.0wt.% of Ti and/or Zr, 15.0-35.0wt.% (in total) of Ag and Ni (the amount of Ni is 5.0-20.0 wt.%) and remaining part of inevitable impurities and falling within a polygon shown by the heavy lines in the figure. A ceramic surface is metallized with the composition by adding a binder to a powdery mixture having the above composition and particle size of from 325 mesh to sub-micron, applying the mixture to a prescribed surface of a ceramic material, drying the mixture and keeping in a non-oxidizing atmosphere (e.g. Ar, N2, H2 or vacuum) at 1000-1100 deg.C for 5-30min to melt or semi-melt the powder and form a metallized layer.
