PURPOSE:To enable the determination of an aldehyde in a liquid in high sensitivity and response by reacting an aldehyde in liquid with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NAD) in the presence of aldehyde dehydrogenase(ADNse). CONSTITUTION:An NAD solution and a specimen solution are supplied by pumps 16 and 22, respectively. A standard aldehyde solution is introduced through a solution injector 20 and the above components are introduced through a feeding pipe 24 into an immobilized enzyme reactor 18 containing immobilized ADNse and made to react with each other to oxidize various aldehyde in the specimen solution into the corresponding acids and, at the same time, to reduce NAD to reduce NAD (NADH). The fluorescence of the NADH is determined by a fluorometric instrument 14 to determine the amount of the aldehyde in the specimen solution. As necessary, a formaldehyde dehydrogenase capable of selectively oxidizing formaldehyde is used as the ADNse to determine the formaldehyde in the liquid.
