PURPOSE:To improve operability during the restarting of operation, by a method wherein a memory means, storing a position, in which copy sheets are contained in a tray in a sorter, is provided, and a tray position is automatically selected during the occurrence of a trouble, such as jam, the short supply of sheets. CONSTITUTION:A sorter 1, having an incoming port 2 positioned opposite to a paper discharge port 4 of a duplicator body 3, is provided with a number of housing shelves T1-T15 vertically disposed at given intervals, and a temporary containing tray T0 located in an uppermost stage. In order to assort sheets fed to the trays T1-T15, gate claws G1-G15, being movable in and out from a conveyance passage formed by a vertical convey belt 13 and convey rollers R1- R15, are provided. In which case, a memory means, which stores positions where the sheets are contained in the trays T1-T15, is installed to the driving control circuit of the sorter 1, and during the occurrence of a trouble, a tray position is selected according to the memory contents of the memory means, and this enables restarting of a sort motion commencing with a condition before the occurrence of a trouble.
