PURPOSE:To perform electron beam welding of high nitrogen steel having a sound weld zone without weld defects by oscillating a ferritic thick plate, etc., containing relatively high N with a prescribed width in the vertical direction to the welding direction by using an electron beam in the range of a specific wavelength. CONSTITUTION:The ferritic high-nitrogen thick plate containing 500 - 1,000ppm N or an austenitic high-nitrogen thick steel plate containing 2,500 - 5,000ppm N is subjected to electron beam welding under the following welding conditions. Namely, these high-nitrogen thick steel plates are subjected to electron beam welding with the oscillating width in the range of 0.5 - 3mm by oscillating the electron beam vertically to the welding direction by using 50 - 5,000Hz electron beam. By this method, the high-nitrogen steel where defective welding is made inevitable due to occurrence of weld defects (porosity, incomplete fusion, cracking, etc.) by the conventional electron beam welding technique can be subjected to electron beam welding so as to obtain the sound weld zone.
