NEW MATERIAL:The antineoplastic substance GF-1 originated from the fruit body of Grifola frondosa. Elemental analysis, C 40.5%, H 6.0%, N 1.0%; molecular weight, about 1,000,000 (by gel-filtration); melting point, decomposes at 230 deg.C; specific rotation, [alpha]D=+110 deg. (C=0.01, H2O); solubility, soluble in water, acid and alkali, etc., insoluble in acetone and ether; pH, about 6 as 1% aqueous solution; color reactions, positive to anthrone-sulfuric acid reagent, etc. and pseudo- positive to biuret reaction reagent, etc.; color, light gray. USE:Carcinostatic agent. PREPARATION:The fruit body of Grifola frondosa is cut to fine pieces or crushed, defatted with ethyl alcohol, and extracted e.g. with hot water. The extract is dialyzed, concentrated, and mixed with ethyl alcohol. The produced precipitate is separated by filtration and dissolved in dilute alkali solution. A solution of a copper salt is added to the above solution, and the precipitated polysaccharide is dissolved in acetic acid, desalted, and purified to obtain the objective antineoplastic substance GF-1.
