PURPOSE:To perform the setting of the gap quantity in short time simply with high accuracy by confirming the gap quantity with the state of abutting both strips and by the equipment composition to correct with confirming the quantity further when the value differs from the value necessary for welding. CONSTITUTION:The clamp device 6 at the inlet side namely a strip 4b is advanced by the motion of a cylinder 21 when a change-over valve 26 is operated in the advancing direction by setting a pressure adjusting valve 27 and speed adjusting valve 28 to optional value. The strip 4b is then stopped at the place where the inlet side clamp 6 collides with a stopper 25 and the prescribed butt gap is formed in the space with the preceding strip 4a. The pressure is changed by the pressure adjusting valve 27 and the output of the cylinder 21 is changed as well when this gap is found not of the optimal value necessary for welding. Namely the butt gap is amended to the necessary value by utilizing the deflection property of the stopper 25 having the prescribed stiffness. In case of performing automatic setting the butt gap is measured after the butt operation thereafter the measuring value and setting target value are operated and the corrected signal is transmitted to the pressure adjusting valve 27 based on the value thereof.
