When the hole 17 has been pierced a cap 29 retaining the cartridge 27 is removed and an adjusting member (not shown) with a screw threaded spindle is attached to the grinding member. This is arranged to contact the piercing tool 15 so that it can be adjusted in position in the channel 13 and against the action of a spring 24 to control flow through the flow channel 19. In an alternative embodiment, the adjusting member is present at the outset and the explosive cartridge is located in a side channel off the channel 13. The guide channel may, if desired, extend at an acute angle to the pipe 10.
