Method for operation of a gas turbine unit for simultaneous production of electricity and heat as well as a gas turbine unit for performance of the method. The gas turbine unit comprises a combustion chamber 16, a high pressure turbine 10 driven by gas from the combustion chamber and a low pressure turbine 13 driven by waste gas from the high pressure turbine, a low pressure compressor 14 driven by the low pressure turbine and a high pressure compressor 11 driven by the high pressure turbine and connected in series to it to supply air under pressure from the combustion chamber, and a generator 12 driven by the high pressure turbine to generate electricity, a recuperator 18 for heat exchange between the waste gases and compressor air, as well as intermediate cooler 22 between the low and high pressure compressor and a waste gas heat exchanger 19 both for heating hot water. The low pressure turbine is arranged with variable geometry and a controllable bypass connection 20 is arranged above the recuperator.
