One or more characteristics of the bulk material are measured whilst concurrently measuring one or more variables. The variables are independent of the scales for measuring the characteristics. The variables directly or indirectly affect the normal operation of the scales and thus affect the accuracy or the reliability of the results obtained. - At least one of the measurements obtained by measuring the variables which affects the accuracy of the results obtained is concurrently compared with an appropriate reference. The characteristics are pref. measured during handling of the bulk material.
