HCHO scavenger compsns. comprise an H2O-soluble active methylene cpd. RCO-Y-COR1 (I); where R = Me or H(O(CH2)m)n-O-; R1 = Me or H(O(CH2)m')n'-O-; m and/or m' = 1-3; n and/or n' = 1-19; and Y = CH2 or CH2COCH2. Compsns. pref. contains (I) where m and/or m' = 2; n and/or n' = 1-3 and Y = CH2, esp.. Compsns. contg. (I; R = Me or HO(CH2)2O(CH2)2O, R1 = HO(CH2)2O(CH2O2O, Y = CH2). By reaction of a dialkyl malonate (II) (or alkyl acetoacetate) with an opt. substd. polyhydric alcohol in the presence of a transesterificn. catalyst (pref. 0.2 ml/mol. of (II); esp. 99% H2SO4) at 95-100 deg.C, esp. in vacuo. Mol. ratio (II) : (III) pref. = 1:2.2.
