A process for producing ferrochromium by thermal reduction of pellets in a rotary kiln and subsequent smelting of the ferrochromium from the reduced pellets in a melting furnace is described. In the process, it is provided that 200 to 500 g of coal per kg of chromium ore are present in the pellets, that a mixture of starch, SiO2 and a base is used as pelleting agent, that the thermal reduction proceeds during 2 to 5 hours at 1200 to 1400@C, that the reduced pellets are separated from the rotary kiln output by hot screening in a reducing atmosphere and that the smelting takes place at 1600 to 1700@C.
