A description is given of an assessment conveyor with endless conveyor links 3, which move in the conveying direction, on which outwardly pointing driving dogs 5 are provided and between which compartments 6 extending transversely with respect to the conveying direction are formed for receiving essentially upright sawn pieces of timber 7. Each compartment 6 for receiving a sawn piece of timber 7 is assigned a key pad, which moves with the compartment 6 through assessment conveyors and the keys 8, 9 of which serve for the input of quality stages and or square-cutting commands, related to the sawn piece of timber 7 received in the respective compartment 6. Provided downstream of the assessment conveyor is a square-cutting device, which has two rows 46, 47 of saws 45 suspended such that they can be raised and lowered, the saws 45 having in one row 47 distances from one another in metric division and in the other row 46 distances corresponding to an inch division.
