Currency cards, tickets, identity cards or the like are marked so as to be mechanically and visually readable by means of a device. The device has a transport mechanism for moving the cards and a reading/marking means which comprizes a magnetic head 60 for encoding a magnetic layer and an ink-jet printer 30 for printing. The latter is fastened to a slide 31 which is motively movable transversely to the direction of transport of the card 1. Preferably, an optical reading head is also arranged on the slide 31. Suitable currency cards 1 are provided, on one side, with a magnetic layer for recording the machine- readable data and, on the other side, with an absorbent coating for the print. IMAGE
