The high chloride content of the FGD material based on CaSO3 and/or CaSO4 obtained in flue gas desulphurization which prevents direct processing to produce cement clinker is substantially reduced by pretreatment of the FGD material with ammonium sulphate and subsequent precalcination in an oxidizing atmosphere. The pretreated low-chloride FGD material obtained is, after mixing with further raw meal components, deacidified in a reducing atmosphere and then calcined in an oxidizing atmosphere to produce cement clinker.
