A process for the preparation of a clinker substitute material for use in the production of cement, comprising the steps of:a) predrying of clay with an iron content & 1,5 w -% in the form of iron oxides and a kaolinite content of 40 w -% to a moisture content of 10% by.-%,b) comminution of the clay to a particle size & 2 mm,c) calcination of the clay by thermal treatment in an oven at a temperature of 600 to 1.000°C,d) of the clay, thermal treatment under reducing conditions and at a temperature of 600 to 1.000°C,e) intermediate cooling of the reduction product are under a deoxygenated atmosphere to a temperature of & 300°C,f) end of cooling of the product.
