Method for improving the activity of a pharmaceutical composition of extracellular superoxide dismutase (EC- SOD). It involves incorporating into said composition catalase or another antioxidant which works together with the EC- SOD to reduce the toxic effects of the oxygen reduction products, and/or also incorporating heparin, heparan sulphate, other sulphated glycosaminoglycans, dextran sulphate or other similar negatively charged compounds, which mobilize the EC-SOD present on the surface of the cells, supplying an extra dose of EC-SOD in the plasma. These compositions are used in the prophylaxis or treatment of diseases associated with the presence or formation of superoxide radicals.
