ACCELERATED MICRODILUTION DETERMINATION OF BACTERIA SUSCEPTIBILITY TO ANTIBIOTICS

In an accelerated microdilution method for determining antibiotic susceptibility of an oxyphilic bacterium, a positive control aliquot containing the bacterium without the antibiotic and the test aliquots containing the bacterium and increasing concentrations of the antibiotic are subjected to preparatory incubation for a time sufficient for the antibiotic to act on the bacterial cells and use up the oxygen therein. A predetermined amount of oxygen is added to the aliquots, a second incubation is carried out until the oxygen content of the positive control aliquot is reduced by at least 50 %, and the oxygen content of the series is then quantitatively determined as a measure of antibiotic susceptibility.
