A roll unwinding device, especially for a printing machine, possesses clamping sleeves (23) having tapering end sections (41). The carrier receiving the roll (2) is freely movable, at least to a degree of horizontal freedom of movement, so that an automatic alignment of the core with the clamping sleeve takes place when the clamping sleeves (23) are introduced in the core. In the vertical direction, the force exerted by the tapering end section (41) can be determined by a force measuring device and be used for adjusting a lifting device. The height of the roller carrier can also be adjusted while the clamping sleeves are loaded in the direction of introduction. This permits a simple automatic alignment. IMAGE
