Maleic anhydride is grafted onto unsaturated elastomeric polymers comprising units derived from at least two different monomers of general formula R-CH = CH₂ (R = hydrogen or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms) and from conjugated or non-conjugated dienes by reaction in mass, carried out by heating a mixture of said anhydride with the polymer in the presence of a catalyst of formula:MnXz (I)wherein:M = a metal of group VIII of the periodic system, in particular Rh and Ru;X = a counterion;n = valence of the counterion;z = valence of the metal.
