In order to remove disruptive wax particles and to increase the specific volume, the short fiber fraction (K) is subjected to a heat treatment (15) in a special process step, in particular by steam in a screw heater over a defined residence time and at a defined temperature. The disruptive wax particles are eliminated with relatively low energy expenditure in such a way that wax stains can no longer be detected in the finished product. When the given strength is maintained, the specific volume of the short fiber fraction is increased considerably.
